A strong international position, with important context

The UK was among the top-performing systems across science, mathematics and reading. PISA compares national education systems; it does not assess individual schools.

Scores are ordered from highest to lowest. They are estimates, so small score differences do not necessarily indicate a meaningful difference in performance.

* Interpret with caution because one or more PISA sampling standards were not met. “Order” reflects the score-sorted table, not a statistically definitive rank. Changes compare PISA 2025 with PISA 2022; missing values were not reported by the OECD.

The long view

OECD scores since 2015

Science
489482
Reading
489461
Mathematics
485463

Across OECD countries, reading recorded the steepest fall over the decade. Mathematics also declined sharply, while science proved more resilient.

How to read the data

Scores are a system-level signal

  • PISA assesses a representative sample of 15-year-olds, regardless of the year group they are in.
  • A score is an estimate. Close results can be statistically indistinguishable, so the table order is not a definitive league table.
  • Sampling cautions are shown with an asterisk, and missing OECD values are left unpublished rather than estimated.

Common questions

About the PISA 2025 results

Are these the PISA 2026 results?

These are the results of the PISA 2025 assessment cycle, published by the OECD in 2026. The assessment is called PISA 2025 even though its results were released the following year.

What is the UK’s PISA 2025 ranking?

In score order, the UK placed 8th for science and 10th for both reading and mathematics. Close scores may not be statistically different, so these positions should not be read as definitive ranks.

Which education systems had the highest PISA scores?

B-S-J-Z (China) recorded the highest science and mathematics scores. Singapore led reading, while Macao (China) led computational problem-solving.

Was there a PISA 2024 assessment?

PISA is normally conducted every three years. The current cycle is PISA 2025 and the previous cycle was PISA 2022. Use the cycle selector above to explore both sets of results.
